Welcome to the LHO Online Core Training Modules
Thank you for choosing to serve your community in this important public health role in Maine. Maine is one of only a few states with public health officers located at the municipal level - in each town, city and plantation - where they are ideally suited to help protect & promote the health & wellness of the local community they know well. It’s a varied and sometimes complicated role, and people come to the role from a variety of backgrounds and expertise.
Upon completion of these LHO Core Training modules, you will have a general knowledge base from which to handle public health complaints in a competent and professional manner consistent with available laws and practices. We hope you will also feel more connected to the state’s public health resources, including those at the Maine CDC and through your District Public Health Liaison, and to the many state and local organizations and public health resources that are available to support you in your work.
Training objectives. This training provides you with:
- A brief history of Local Health Officers (“LHOs”) in Maine;
- Introduction to LHO statutory duties and authorities;
- Introduction to common complaints encountered by LHOs;
- Strategies for addressing complaints; and
- Resources to help you handle situations you are likely to encounter as an LHO.
The training is self-directed and will take approximately 4-6 hours to complete.
