Strategies for Employers to Showcase Job Opportunities to Veterans

Department of Labor CareerCenters

At all of Maine's Department of Labor CareerCenters, Local Veterans Employment Representatives (LVERs) work closely with area businesses to gather information about their job opportunities and promote those to veterans.  LVERs also work with company executives to educate their staff about the value of hiring veterans and tactics for recruiting veterans. Maine Hire a Vet Campaign

The Maine Hire A Vet Campaign is an innovative joint initiative of the Department of Labor, Bureau of Veterans' Services, and Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) to engage Maine's employers in recruiting and hiring veterans.

The intent of the Campaign is to engage 100 employers in hiring 100 veterans across 100 days, typically from Labor Day through December 31st each year. Maine Hire a Vet first launched in 2015 and now in 2019 is in its fourth year of operation. In 2018, the Campaign ended up with 191 participating employers who hired 286 veterans from all 16 counties, with an average wage of $23.00 per hour.

In addition to ongoing employer/veteran connections, the Campaign also included a "Military 101" training for employers and a weekly "Veteran Showcase" that is e-mailed to all employers, highlighting the skill set and career aspirations of a particular veteran.

Interested employers and veterans should please contact Steve Roy at the Augusta Career Center to become involved: (Steven.L.Roy@maine.gov)
