Statistics

The numbers below represent real people - family, friends and neighbors. It is the goal of the Department of the Secretary of State, along with its organ donation partners, to decrease the number of people waiting for a transplant.

You can help by adding your name to the Maine Organ Donor Registry.

In the United States in 2013:

-More than 121,000 people are waiting for an organ transplant.
-On average, 18 people die each day waiting for a transplant.
-Every 11 minutes a new name is added to the national waiting list.

In Maine:

-29 organ donors, in 2013, made 101 life-saving organ transplants possible;
-200 tissue donors, in 2013, helped save and improve many lives;
-114 people are currently awaiting a kidney; and
-1 person is currently awaiting a pancreas.

In New England, the current waitlist (which includes Mainers listed at out-of-state hospitals) has:

-5,049 people awaiting a life saving organ;
-3,833 people awaiting a kidney;
-828 people awaiting a liver;
-68 people awaiting a pancreas;
-70 people awaiting a kidney/pancreas;
-236 people awaiting a heart;
-119 people awaiting a lung;
-2 people awaiting an intestine.

Tragically, hundreds of people from New England died while waiting for an organ transplant in 2013.
