Welcome to the Maine State Archives
This February the Maine State Archives marks African American History Month by sharing two documents about John Lewis. John Lewis was a Methodist minister at a church in an African American community in Warren, Maine. On the left is a letter Lewis wrote in 1858 to the Secretary of State asking for the certificate needed to solemnize marriages. On the right is a copy of the commission granted to him that same year.
