AUGUSTA, MAINE — The Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is urging everyone to prepare for the first snowfall of the season, expected tomorrow. This storm may cause dangerous driving conditions and affect holiday travel. Roads could be slippery, and visibility may be poor. Air travel might also face delays, especially at major airports on the East Coast.
The National Weather Service reports that snow and rain will start Thursday morning and continue into the night. Inland areas will likely see plowable snow, while the coast may experience mostly rain.
“Please stay safe during this storm,” said MEMA Director Pete Rogers. “If you plan to travel, allow extra time and make sure your emergency car kit is ready.”
Your emergency car kit should have the following supplies:
- Flashlight with fresh batteries
- First aid kit
- Ice scraper
- Snow shovel
- Jumper cables (learn how to use them first)
- Water and snacks
- Blanket
- Cellphone charger
- Reflective triangles, flare, or bright clothing for signals
- Basic tool kit
- Waterproof matches
If you must travel during the storm, please consider the following:
- Never warm up a vehicle in a closed area like a garage (risk of carbon monoxide poisoning).
- Check that your tires are properly inflated and in good condition.
- Don’t mix different types of tires.
- Ensure windshield wiper fluid is full.
- Clear all the snow and ice from your vehicle.
- Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid running out of fuel.
- Bring a fully charged cellphone and have roadside assistance numbers ready.
- Give MaineDOT snowfighters plenty of space, time, and courtesy.
- If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle and signal for help with a bright cloth or hazard lights.
- Run the engine just enough to stay warm but conserve fuel.
- Let someone know your travel plans and expected arrival time.
