Four CTE Intersections Workshops have been held since May 2015. These events brought CTE, English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics instructors together to start the task of finding where learning intersections exist. The work produced at these events is available below.

Statement: We aligned the CTE standards for Culinary Arts (American Culinary Federation Standards) with the current ELA standards. Then we brought in the Guiding Principles and the Career and Education Development standards. It is reasonable to expect that CTE students can demonstrate sufficient grade level academic proficiencies when it is a natural fit within the curriculum. Through our discussion as four Culinary Arts instructors and two ELA teachers it was clear that a high level of rigor is present. For example, on the surface the menu planning part of the ACF curriculum may seem basic, but when aligned with ELA standards, the complexities become apparent. Students are asked to produce relevant materials at grade level leading to multiple sources of evidence to prove academic proficiency. As we continued working, it also became clear that students have multiple opportunities to achieve proficiency at these standards. Our group represented Rockland, Lincoln, Skowhegan, Dexter, Ellsworth, and Oakland and as a group we applied our professional filter to this work. We hope that as we move forward with PBE, this draft will be valued and utilized at the local level.

American Culinary Federation (ACF) and Math (DOC, 60KB) *This work is our identification of possible area of some of the intersections between the Culinary Arts and the Common Core High School Mathematics Standards and Practices. While this list is in no way exhaustive it does show some overlap between the two sets of standards and where Mathematical reasoning/understanding occur in the Culinary Arts.
